Litter Act 1979-1981

Litter & illegal dumping of rubbish is a Worldwide problem.

WA Rangers, helping to keep our small corner of Planet Earth clean & tidy.

Perth, Western Australia

Voted cleanest city in Australia, 10th cleanest city in the World

Working in conjunction with the "Keep Australia Beautiful Council", WA Rangers through Local Government, are responsible for litter control.  The Litter Act of 1979-1981 is the State Legislation Rangers are authorised to enforce.

Perth is one of the cleanest cities in the World.  A key to this accomplishment is good community education programs.  Rangers regularly visit schools teaching children the value of litter control and the recycling of household rubbish.

Regular cleanup days are conducted at schools with Rangers and teaches assisting in the programs.  A Ranger is seen here conducting such a cleanup, he instructs children not to pick up glass or sharps (syringes) and to avoid busy roads.

So what constitutes littering and as responsible members of the community, what should we avoid doing or report if we observe?

The obvious ones are discarding litter from vehicles in car parks or cigarette butts.

Not so obvious litter offences.

Leaving shopping trolleys in the street.  >

Placing advertising material on cars.  >

Danger !

One of the most dangerous forms of litter we should all be aware of, is that of used syringes (sharps).

The Ranger here has found a used syringe close to a children's playground.  The syringe will be stored for safe keeping in a special container and later destroyed.  Syringes have also been known to be deliberately placed in children's sand pits.

Other forms of littering.

Building rubble and tree branches.  >

A huge tree stump.  >

"Rust In Peace"  A car is burnt out and left.  >

Litter can be a serious problem, but with education and enforcement programs, cities, towns, country roads and parks can be kept clean and tidy and a spirit of community pride developed.

Why not contact your local Ranger or Council for information on litter control and recycling?

Litter Report Scheme

How often have you been out driving and seen litter thrown from the car ahead?

How have you felt?  What was your reaction?

In anticipating the answers to these questions the Keep Australia Beautiful Council (WA) has a litter reporting scheme in which you can participate by reporting instances of littering from motor vehicles.

Report cards are supplied to enable you to easily report the relevant details of where, when and what took place, as well as the licence number of the vehicle involved.  When complete the card can be mailed to the KABC office without stamp or envelope.

We hope to educate these erring motorists who are spoiling our roads.

In order to maintain confidentiality,  people who regularly make reports are assigned a number so that their name and address do not have to appear on the card.  If you wish to join this litter reporting scheme please contact KABC at kabc@dec.wa.gov.au or all telephone enquiries to a KABC Enforcement Officer on 64675129.

The KABC, in liaison with the Police Department, will take appropriate action against the offender.
